Loviatar no. 10 Progress Report: Lineup Card

A while back, I wrote 2,500 words about a Ventrue neonate and the Herd he was cultivating. What I liked about the article was the emerging tragedy that resulted from the vampire cruelly manipulating the women. He had the power to improve their lives, but intentionally kept them weak and dependent. After I finished the piece, I realized that I had unintentionally wrote a rather sad depiction of spousal abuse.

However, I scrapped the article. I was worried that Vampire: The Requiem material would turn people off. After reading the comments from yesterday's post, I decided to resurrect it. Like I mentioned yesterday, the primarily OSR readership is remarkably tolerant of new ideas with their "carve off what I need and leave the rest" philosophy. I was also inspired because I arrived home to find the gorgeous Daeva clan book waiting for me. :)

No. 10 will therefore feature Hex 006 and an article that continues the "A Lonely Dance on a Cold, Northern Shore" series. No. 11 will likely be an all Call of Cthulhu issue as I try to establish a starting point for future articles. Hex 007 - the final hex - will be published when my pea brain figures out a way to present the forest realm of Lady Shesayeth in a clever, creative manner.

  1. One of the reasons I read your zine (any zine, really) is because I am getting to know something about the person behind it. Whatever you think is fun is what I want to read about. If you like the nWod, I'll read about it, even though - or especially because - I know little about what WW has done since about 2000 and don't play the current incarnation of the WW game. Learning what you think is villainous, what you think is heroic, or how you and your players interact is all part of getting to know you.

If I wanted a product that pandered to my already existing tastes, I'd be reading something from the corporate gaming-industrial complex.

  2. I like seeing well written characters through the lense of a different game. Although I *love* the hexcrawl series, I'm happy to see a mix in the issues.

    1. I think mixing things up a bit should help to keep me fresh. At least I hope it will ;)

  3. Sounds like a fun line-up.

One other thought: you can always periodically return to the Hex Crawl as the muse moves you in the future. For example, at some point (hint, hint), you might want to tell us more about the Free City of Haldane. So that would be a cool way to dip your toes back into he fantasy setting you've started developing without any real pressure to keep plugging away at it in ever issue. You could add some notes on adding Lovecraftian horror or otherwise modifying your CoC stuff for a fantasy game, etc.

But, as the others have said, I think people read zines for the perspective of the author. Sure, the actual content inevitably matters, but we OSR types are prety flexible.

    1. I have been thinking about ways to approach the Freecity. Nothing feels just right so far, but I'm I will find a solution eventually. :)
