Loviatar No. 7 Progress Report: The Stone Man

Copyright Jay Penn, 2012

Jay sent me the first finished illustration for Loviatar no. 7. As you may have read in issue no. 6, the hexes are home to a variety of spirits, or "small gods." I have been enamored with the idea ever since I read Terry Pratchett's Small Gods. The love affair deepened as I started playing Werewolf: The Apocalypse, with the its spirit guides that give the packs their unique identities.

Some of the spirits in the hex crawl will be benevolent, some indifferent and a few just downright awful. The spirit featured in Loviatar 7's "Hex 003" is a benign elemental that embodies the bounty of the earth. He is called "The Stone Man" and I think Mr. Penn did a hell of a job capturing his essence!

  1. That is a very nifty looking elemental.

Glad to hear you're populating your hexes with wide a variety of denizens for players to encounter.

  2. Hey guys,

I'm sure Jay will appreciate your comments. :) I really hope that 5e is OGL/STL. I'd love to see Jay get a ton of freelance work. It was a freelancer's delight during the d20 era. Fingers crossed for a prosperous new era!

  3. Love the art and the spirit theme... rings of the old UK series of modules, and Jay's artwork is perfect for it.

  4. The UK series was awesome. They stand as a testament to the idea that well-written adventures are an important part of our hobby's history.
